Pompano Beach city commissioners are set to finalize a renewed law enforcement agreement with the Broward Sheriff’s Office during a Tuesday evening vote. The decision follows commissioners’ determination that establishing an independent police department would prove prohibitively costly and logistically challenging for the municipality.
Commissioner Darlene Smith outlined the reasoning behind the choice, noting that the Broward Sheriff’s Office provides specialized capabilities the city could not quickly replicate. “We have specialty crews that can help us with anything, drugs, prostitution, crime of any kind, helicopters, we have a lot of support through BSO,” Smith said. “We wouldn’t have that, at least at the beginning, with our own police force.” The city maintains its own fire rescue operations but determined that developing internal law enforcement infrastructure would require extensive resources and expertise.
The commissioners voted unanimously to accept the contract, which carries a $71 million price tag for the next fiscal year. The agreement includes provisions capping annual rate increases at 5 percent and permits either party to terminate the arrangement with 90 days’ notice. Officials previously estimated that launching a police department from scratch would require approximately three years of development.
