The Minnesota Vikings announced a three-week suspension for defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander following his guilty plea to driving while intoxicated earlier this month. The punishment, which began July 24 and extends through Aug. 13, comes after Alexander was arrested in April on DWI charges.
Court records show Alexander registered a blood alcohol content of 0.169 on an initial breathalyzer test, more than double Minnesota’s legal driving limit. He pleaded guilty on July 16 to third-degree DWI, a misdemeanor offense, and received a $603 fine along with 48 hours of community service and a two-year probation sentence.
The Vikings stated they maintained contact with the NFL throughout the legal proceedings and determined the club suspension was warranted. The league confirmed the disciplinary action will resolve the matter entirely, with no additional sanctions expected under its personal conduct policy.
Alexander, hired by Minnesota in February as both passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, issued a statement accepting responsibility. “I take full responsibility for the situation I put myself in and apologize for not meeting the mark,” he said, pledging commitment to self-improvement.
Alexander’s suspension marks the second instance this week of an NFL assistant coach facing discipline for offseason DWI troubles. The Washington Commanders fired tight ends coach Ben Steele on Monday after his June arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, plus charges for refusing a breathalyzer test and obstructing an officer.
