The White House issued a sharp rebuke Monday after rock musician John Mellencamp ridiculed President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America during a concert performance. White House spokesman Davis Ingle characterized the criticism as coming from an out-of-touch entertainer, telling Fox News Digital that “Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say.” The statement signaled the administration’s intent to dismiss celebrity opposition to the geographic designation change.

During his Saturday night show in Holmdel, New Jersey, as part of his “Dancing Words” Tour, Mellencamp paused mid-performance of his 1983 hit “Pink Houses” to address the crowd directly. While singing the song’s opening verses, which reference “vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico,” he sarcastically interrupted himself, saying “It’s not the Gulf of America? What a stupid f–—-g idea,” according to USA Today. The musician then resumed performing without further political commentary.

“Pink Houses,” which reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, has long been mischaracterized as a patriotic anthem, though Mellencamp has consistently described it as social commentary examining class inequality and the gap between American ideals and reality. The iconic track was inspired by an image of a man sitting outside a small pink house along an Indiana highway, a moment that became the basis for the song’s memorable chorus.
