New York prosecutors have made clear they will push back against a potential federal plea agreement for Luigi Mangione if such a deal threatens to derail his upcoming state murder trial, according to court documents recently made public. In a letter reviewed by Fox News Digital, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office warned that it stands ready to notify the federal judge handling Mangione’s case if a guilty plea would undermine the state’s prosecution efforts.
The filing comes after a June court proceeding in which U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett postponed Mangione’s federal trial to January 2027, allowing his New York state murder case to proceed first. Mangione, 28, has entered not guilty pleas in both matters related to the December 2024 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel.
Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote on July 2 that the federal court should weigh any impact on the state prosecution before accepting a plea. Prosecutors also indicated the court should consider input from Thompson’s family members regarding any proposed agreement.
Reports emerged in June suggesting Mangione’s legal team and federal prosecutors had explored a possible plea arrangement but failed to reach terms. Mangione’s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo criticized the disclosure as part of a pattern to bias the defendant.
At the June 29 hearing, Judge Garnett concluded it was impractical for defense counsel to prepare for simultaneous high-profile trials. Agnifilo confirmed the state trial remains scheduled to begin September 8 and stated the defense had been assured no delays would be granted.
Under the revised federal timeline, prospective jurors will complete questionnaires in early December, with jury selection beginning January 5, 2027, and opening statements set for January 25. Authorities arrested Mangione five days after he allegedly fled the city, apprehending him at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s location.
