San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan came perilously close to losing his right eye in a vehicle collision earlier this month, according to NFL analyst Chris Simms. Simms disclosed the extent of Shanahan’s injuries during an appearance on “PFT Live,” describing photographs he received from Shanahan’s wife, Mandy, documenting the aftermath of the July 14 accident near the coach’s Northern California residence.
The 49ers coach sustained a broken nose, three fractured ribs, a broken hand and over 40 stitches to his face following the collision with another SUV. He also experienced a severe concussion in the multi-vehicle incident. Simms emphasized the severity of Shanahan’s facial trauma, noting the prominent scarring on the coach’s forehead and the alarming nature of the visible injuries.
The 49ers organization announced that Shanahan would participate in team activities on a limited basis during the start of training camp as he recovers from non-life-threatening injuries. The team expressed gratitude to first responders who assisted at the scene. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster is temporarily assuming Shanahan’s duties while he undergoes concussion protocol.
Simms revealed that Shanahan was emotionally affected by the accident, recognizing how narrowly he avoided catastrophic injury. The analyst noted that Shanahan expressed concern for the other driver involved in the crash and is focused on her well-being. Shanahan appeared at 49ers training camp Sunday wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses to conceal his injuries.
