Griffin Conine ended Miami’s franchise-record 12-game losing skid with a walk-off run-scoring single on Monday, propelling the Marlins to an 8-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The triumph marked the team’s first win since July 9, snapping a stretch that had become the longest in franchise history. Conine’s clutch hit came after the Marlies had allowed the Phillies to erase a 5-2 lead they had built in the opening innings.
Philadelphia closer Jhoan Duran (1-4) entered the game protecting a 7-5 advantage before loading the bases without any outs. Heriberto Hernández responded with a tying two-run single that knotted the score, setting the stage for Conine’s heroics. Hernández also went deep off Phillies starter Zack Wheeler earlier in the contest, as did Conine, who drove in the eventual winning run.
Miami’s offense was powered by multiple contributors in the comeback bid. Jakob Marsee delivered a run-scoring double while Otto Lopez added an RBI triple for the Marlins. The Phillies’ collapse was particularly costly given their dominance heading into the final innings, though they have struggled considerably since the All-Star break with a 3-7 record over their last 10 games.
Bryce Harper staked Philadelphia to an early advantage with his 22nd home run of the season, a 419-foot, two-run drive against Marlins starter Tyler Phillips in the first inning. Wheeler lasted only three innings for the Phillies, surrendering six hits with six strikeouts before being removed. Calvin Faucher (5-5) secured the victory with a scoreless ninth inning.
Philadelphia will counter with righthander Aaron Nola (3-8, 5.82 ERA) in the series’ second game against Miami’s Sandy Alcantara (10-6, 4.01 ERA).
