Shares of ChangXin Memory Technologies surged in Shanghai trading Monday following the launch of mainland China’s most significant initial public offering in recent years. The company, known as CXMT, is the nation’s leading memory chipmaker and has benefited substantially from the artificial intelligence sector’s explosive growth. The stock opened with gains of approximately 470% by midday trading.
CXMT raised at least $8.6 billion through the offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR market, pricing shares at 8.66 yuan, or $1.3 each. The company’s estimated market capitalization remains considerably smaller than competitors Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology, though it ranks as the world’s fourth-largest DRAM chipmaker by shipment volume. Founded in 2016 in Hefei, the company manufactures dynamic random access memory chips used in artificial intelligence servers, automobiles, smartphones, and personal computers.
Beijing aims to develop greater technological independence while facing significant constraints from American-led export controls on advanced chipmaking equipment. CXMT is viewed as China’s most promising avenue for producing cutting-edge high-bandwidth memory chips to support domestic artificial intelligence models, according to technology policy experts. The company’s first-quarter 2026 revenue reached 50.8 billion yuan, representing a more than 700% year-on-year increase driven by soaring artificial intelligence demand.
Counterpoint Research data shows CXMT held roughly 6% of the global DRAM market in 2025, with Samsung commanding 36%, SK Hynix at 29%, and Micron at 24%. The firm projects CXMT’s market share could reach approximately 11% by 2028, though experts estimate the company will need at least 15% global market share for sustained competitiveness. Supply chain constraints and restricted access to world-class manufacturing tools remain significant obstacles to scaling production capacity.
Some U.S. lawmakers have recently urged the Trump administration to prohibit American firms from purchasing CXMT memory chips on national security grounds. The Pentagon has designated CXMT among various Chinese companies as having military connections, though Beijing has largely rejected such characterizations.
