Nineteen Cadets Hospitalized After Unidentified Illness at Maryland Military Academy

Nineteen cadets attending a military-style youth academy near Washington, D.C., required hospitalization Sunday after falling ill with an unidentified condition, triggering a mass casualty emergency response. The incident occurred at the Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Academy in Laurel, Maryland, operated by the DC National Guard, a military-style intervention program serving at-risk adolescents.

Cadets began showing symptoms following lunch, prompting emergency responders to transport multiple patients to regional hospitals. One cadet’s mother reported that hospital blood work revealed elevated carbon monoxide levels in her son, who developed dizziness, headaches and nausea hours after initial cases were reported. The academy subsequently announced a temporary closure in response to the outbreak.

Anne Arundel County Fire Department investigators conducted a carbon monoxide assessment at the facility but found no elevated concentrations of the gas, according to FOX 5 DC. Officials have not definitively determined the cause of the illness, though they indicated the outbreak may be food-related.

DC National Guard leadership stated that cadet and staff safety represent their paramount concern while the investigation proceeds with emergency medical and public health officials. One adult staff member was evaluated on-site but declined further medical intervention, while the 19 affected cadets remained hospitalized for treatment and observation.
