Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, endorsed President Donald Trump’s executive action this week addressing what he characterized as ideological bias at the Smithsonian Institution. During an appearance on Fox & Friends Weekend, Gill praised Trump’s directive requiring the installation of warning placards along National Park Service pathways adjacent to the National Museum of American History.
Gill characterized the executive order as a significant departure from previous administrations, stating Trump was taking action against what he saw as decades of leftward institutional drift. The congressman expressed optimism that the White House would prevent what he described as the systematic infiltration of American cultural institutions by progressive ideology.
On Friday, Trump signed the executive order mandating signage that would alert visitors to a White House report critical of the museum’s historical presentation. The directive specifically calls for temporary exhibits and additional signage designed to counter what the administration views as inaccurate portrayals of American history.
Gill went further in his criticism, naming National Museum of American History Director Anthea Hartig as a target for removal. He characterized the museum’s current leadership and exhibits as “woke nonsense” funded by taxpayers and called for institutional restructuring that prioritizes patriotic themes.
Museum Director Hartig defended the institution’s approach during congressional testimony earlier this week, stating the Smithsonian remains politically neutral and aims to present comprehensive historical documentation. She explained that reframing historical narratives means adding previously excluded voices and evidence rather than erasing existing accounts.
The dispute originates from the White House’s “Saving America’s Story” report, which Trump cited in his order as evidence the museum treats American history as a tool for advancing social justice rather than celebrating shared national heritage. Fox News Digital requested comment from the Smithsonian but had not received a response at the time of reporting.
