Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov put on an offensive display during an offseason charity hockey game in his native Russia, executing a lacrosse-style Michigan move that reminded observers of his elite hand skills. The flashy goal came during the Match of the Year, an event organized by NHL players Artemi Panarin and Mikhail Sergachev that also featured Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin among its participants.
Michkov’s recent performance on the ice stands in contrast to a disappointing 2025-26 regular season in which he accumulated 51 points across 81 games, a notable decline from his rookie-year production. The Flyers forward faced significant scrutiny after arriving at training camp overweight and struggling to regain his competitive edge early in the campaign.
During Philadelphia’s unexpected playoff run, Michkov saw limited action, appearing in just one contest while recording a single point during the postseason. Despite the inconsistent showing, the organization views him as a cornerstone of its young roster as the team transitions from a rebuilding phase toward playoff contention.
The Flyers made aggressive moves this offseason to bolster their core, re-signing forwards Trevor Zegras and defenseman Jamie Drysdale to long-term deals. General Manager Daniel Briere’s pursuit of Leo Carlsson through an offer sheet failed to materialize, but the franchise continues to build around emerging talent like Michkov.
