The New York Mets suffered another setback Friday night when All-Star outfielder Juan Soto departed their game against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers due to an ongoing calf injury. The 27-year-old was removed during the sixth inning, marking the latest interruption to his season caused by the ailment that first emerged on July 16.
Soto managed two walks before departing the contest at Citi Field. Interim manager Andy Green had acknowledged the injury before first pitch, expressing optimism about its trajectory. “It’s improving for him,” Green told MLB.com. “Hopefully after today, we don’t have to talk about it anymore.” The Mets had already given Soto time off earlier in the week to address the persistent problem.
Through 84 games this season, Soto is batting .283 with 83 hits and 21 home runs. His absence from the lineup carries heightened significance given he remains the team’s sole All-Star representative. The injury compounds an already challenging season for the franchise, which recently hosted the Dodgers following their White House visit.
Soto is in the second year of a 15-year, $765 million contract he signed with New York in December 2024. The recurring injury raises questions about his durability as the Mets navigate the remainder of the season.
