White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt characterized President Donald Trump’s anticipated remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a blend of humor and substance. Speaking to Fox News on Friday, Leavitt promised attendees would witness a speech that is simultaneously “unifying yet vicious, and serious yet hilarious,” while emphasizing that entertainment value would be paramount.
The dinner, traditionally hosted at the Washington Hilton, was violently disrupted in April when an armed assailant identified as Cole Allen attempted to breach security in what authorities described as an assassination attempt. The intrusion forced Secret Service personnel to evacuate Trump and First Lady Melania Trump from the ballroom as panicked guests sought shelter, bringing the annual event to an abrupt halt.
Trump announced in June via Truth Social that the dinner would be rescheduled for July 24, framing the decision as a statement of national resilience. “We cannot allow lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling,” the president wrote, while suggesting his remarks might include pointed commentary about certain individuals present.
First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be absent due to prior commitments. However, FBI Director Kash Patel, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick are among the Cabinet members scheduled to attend the Waldorf Astoria event in Washington, D.C.
