Ackman Criticizes NYC Mayor Mamdani’s Policies, Won’t Rule Out Mayoral Challenge

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman on Monday launched a sharp critique of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, describing his policy agenda as detrimental to the metropolis. During an appearance on the “Money and Rehab” podcast, Ackman acknowledged Mamdani’s intelligence and political acumen while expressing fundamental disagreement with his governing approach.

When pressed on a potential mayoral run against Mamdani, Ackman declined to fully dismiss the possibility but suggested he could accomplish more by backing another candidate. He focused his criticism on Mamdani’s proposed annual tax on luxury residential properties valued above $5 million whose owners do not reside full-time in the city, a proposal the mayor publicized in a video filmed outside hedge fund CEO Ken Griffin’s residence.

Ackman argued that such policies would deter high-net-worth individuals and major economic contributors like Griffin from remaining in New York City. He emphasized that wealthy business leaders generate substantial tax revenue necessary to fund municipal programs and services that Mamdani seeks to expand.

Beyond the luxury tax proposal, Ackman challenged Mamdani’s rent-freeze initiative, contending it creates inequitable conditions between stabilized and market-rate tenants. He argued the policy discourages new construction by making the investment environment unfavorable for real estate developers, ultimately failing to address housing affordability by limiting supply increases.

Ackman did acknowledge Mamdani’s efforts toward fiscal savings, comparing them favorably to the “DOGE-like” cost-reduction initiative. Mamdani’s office has not responded to requests for comment regarding Ackman’s remarks.
