Five Thai Soldiers Killed in Militant Attack in Restive Southern Region

Thai security officials announced Thursday they are pursuing suspects linked to a deadly assault in Narathiwat province that resulted in five military fatalities and multiple civilian injuries. The attack unfolded Wednesday evening when approximately 10 gunmen fired weapons and detonated pipe bombs at a military checkpoint positioned near residential neighborhoods, then escaped the area.

Six noncombatants sustained injuries during the assault, including a 10-year-old child who remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to the regional Internal Security Operations Command. Authorities released photographs depicting the suspected assailants—individuals in dark clothing and headwear riding in a black truck that was later discovered abandoned and engulfed in flames roughly 13 miles from the attack location.

The assailants absconded with three AK-47 rifles, three protective vests and three phones belonging to the soldiers. Nearby residences suffered extensive damage, including shattered windows, doors and roofing, while vehicles parked in the vicinity were destroyed.

Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani provinces—Thailand’s southernmost territories and the nation’s only Muslim-majority regions—have endured a separatist insurgency since 2004 that has claimed thousands of lives. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul characterized the incident as a “terrorist attack” aimed at government targets and a significant national security threat, via government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek.
