The Boston Red Sox organization continued to generate headlines Wednesday as top prospect Justin Gonzales sparked a bench-clearing altercation during a High-A Greenville contest. The incident unfolded after the 6-foot-5, 260-pound slugger connected on a home run and subsequently engaged in a confrontation with opposing catcher Cal Stark upon crossing home plate.
Gonzales, ranked as the organization’s No. 3 prospect, slapped Stark in the face following what appeared to be a verbal exchange during his home run trot. The physical confrontation quickly escalated into a full brawl involving both benches, with teammates attempting to separate the two players as the umpire retreated from the fray.
The incident occurred in South Carolina while the major league Red Sox were concluding a 15-game winning streak in Baltimore, where they lost 5-1.
