Trump to Attend Dignified Transfer Ceremony for Four Service Members Killed in Middle East Conflict

President Donald Trump will observe the dignified transfer of four fallen U.S. service members at Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday, according to White House officials. The ceremony marks the third such occasion Trump has presided over since military operations against Iran commenced in February. The transfer represents one of the most solemn responsibilities shouldered by a commander-in-chief.

Two U.S. Army soldiers killed during Iranian missile and drone strikes in Jordan will have their remains returned to their families during the ceremony. Additionally, the remains of a third service member believed to have gone missing following the Jordan attacks, now presumed deceased, will be transferred. A fourth soldier, who died in Iraq from an Iranian drone detonation, will also be honored in the proceeding.

The Defense Department identified the soldiers killed in Jordan as First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas. Sergeant Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York, disappeared after the Jordan strikes and is now believed dead. Sergeant Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Spring Lake, North Carolina, was killed in the Iraq incident.

“I’ll be going to Dover for something that I feel is — it’s a great honor for me to do it,” Trump said Tuesday from the Oval Office. During the ceremony, transfer cases bearing the American flag containing the remains will be carried from military transport aircraft to awaiting vehicles for transport to the base mortuary facility.

Since combat operations began February 28, eighteen U.S. service members have been killed. Trump stated Tuesday that while defensive systems intercepted nearly all incoming fire during the Jordan attack, some projectiles penetrated the defenses. He indicated that relying on other operators to protect American forces contributed to the breach but did not clarify which parties were responsible for Jordan base security.

Feehan will receive a posthumous promotion to captain along with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge. Gonzales served with the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command in Germany and graduated from Hebron High School in Carrollton last year. Swinton, who enlisted in 2017, will be posthumously promoted to staff sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge.
