Researchers at Ohio State University have identified a potential health benefit from a specially engineered beverage combining tomato and soy compounds. Adults who consumed two 6-ounce servings daily of the tomato-soy drink for four weeks demonstrated significant reductions in multiple systemic inflammation markers, according to findings published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.

The experimental beverage differed substantially from conventional tomato juice. Scientists bred the tomatoes to produce elevated lycopene levels, a potent antioxidant responsible for the fruit’s red pigmentation, and infused the drink with soy isoflavones, plant-based compounds naturally present in soybeans.

When researchers compared the fortified beverage against standard tomato juice, only the specialized formulation significantly decreased three proteins associated with chronic inflammation. The discovery contributes to expanding scientific inquiry into whether particular foods and plant constituents can effectively address inflammation-related health concerns.

Jamie Lee McIntyre, a Florida-based registered dietitian not involved in the research, cautioned against overstating the implications for consumers. She emphasized that the study used a specially concentrated formula unavailable in grocery stores and stressed the need for larger, longer-duration investigations before drawing broad dietary conclusions.

The research involved merely 12 obese adults studied over four weeks, McIntyre noted, limiting the ability to assess lasting health impacts or applicability to the general population. She recommended that people prioritize diverse, colorful eating patterns rather than pursuing individual “anti-inflammatory” foods based on preliminary evidence.
