Federal meteorologists are conducting field assessments to verify whether tornadoes actually formed in North Jersey following Tuesday’s severe weather outbreak. Reports of two separate tornado touchdowns emerged from Morris and Passaic counties as the storm system moved through the region.

The National Weather Service dispatch teams are examining storm damage across both counties to determine if the reported phenomena met the criteria for confirmed tornado activity. Their investigation will establish the storms’ exact characteristics and impact zones.

Residents in the affected areas experienced significant weather disruptions during Tuesday’s system, which prompted the initial tornado reports that prompted the agency’s response and damage survey operations.
