Democratic Infighting Erupts as Squad Members Confuse Colleague in Ukraine Aid Dispute

A social media dispute between moderate Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and two progressive House colleagues devolved into confusion and mutual accusations over Ukraine military aid this week. The confrontation began after Gottheimer publicly criticized the growing sway of democratic socialists within Democratic Party ranks, prompting sharp responses from Rep. Summer Lee of Pennsylvania and Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

Lee initially directed criticism at Gottheimer for supporting weapons shipments to Ukraine, but her attack contained a factual error: she confused the New Jersey congressman with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who had signed an artillery shell destined for Ukraine during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s 2024 visit to the state. Gottheimer quickly pointed out the mix-up, noting the two Jewish politicians shared the same first name.

Omar subsequently entered the fray, defending Lee by referencing Shapiro’s signing of the weaponry. Gottheimer then turned the accusation against both lawmakers by revealing they had themselves voted for a $60.8 billion Ukraine aid package in April 2024, before Shapiro’s artillery shell signing occurred later that year.

The clash reflects deeper Democratic divisions over Israel policy and antisemitism accusations. Gottheimer has previously argued that his party applies inconsistent standards when addressing antisemitism, condemning it from the political right while remaining silent about instances originating from progressive quarters. Lee and Omar were among 103 Democrats who voted last week for an amendment that would have cut $3.3 billion in foreign military financing and prohibited funds for Israel.
