Capitola Artist Killed in Stabbing Attack; 19-Year-Old Arrested

A Capitola art gallery manager was killed in a daytime stabbing outside a shopping mall parking lot in the California beach community Monday afternoon, prompting authorities to arrest a teenager in connection with the death. Rachell Summers, 73, sustained multiple stab wounds outside the food court area of Capitola Mall just before 1 p.m., according to police records. The mall sits approximately one mile from Capitola Beach, a tourist destination in the Santa Cruz region.

Tyler Leibelt, 19, was taken into custody and charged with murder and related felonies stemming from the attack, court documents show. Investigators determined the violence appeared unprovoked, with detectives finding no prior relationship between the suspect and victim. “Based on the investigation, detectives continue to believe this was a random act of violence, and there is no indication that the suspect knew the victim prior to the attack,” the Capitola Police Department stated.

Records indicate Leibelt faces enhancement charges under California Penal Code 667.5, which typically applies when a defendant has prior felony convictions. If convicted, such enhancements could result in substantially lengthier prison sentences and more restrictive conditions of incarceration. The investigation remains active as authorities continue their review of the incident.

Summers managed the Art of Santa Cruz gallery, which announced it would remain closed through the end of the week following her death. Police expressed condolences to those affected by the attack. “Our hearts remain with Rachell’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic and senseless act of violence,” the department wrote in a statement.
