Idanna Abignente has spent the last dozen years mastering an athletic discipline typically associated with much younger practitioners. The Italian woman, approaching her 83rd birthday, has earned recognition as the world’s oldest pole dancer and maintains a substantial following on social media with tens of thousands of admirers tracking her competitive journey.

Abignente’s entry into the sport began approximately 12 years ago in Turin when a friend of her son opened a pole dancing studio and invited her to participate in a fitness challenge. What started as a casual test of physical capability evolved into a genuine passion that now dominates much of her weekly schedule, with training sessions occurring at least two or three times per week alongside regular competition preparation.

The competitive landscape in her age category remains sparse, with Abignente winning every competition she enters simply due to the absence of other competitors over 80 years old. Her closest rival to date was a 74-year-old American competitor whom she faced last year, underscoring the rarity of athletes continuing pole dancing at advanced ages.

Abignente characterizes pole dancing not as entertainment but as a legitimate and demanding sport requiring substantial physical commitment. She emphasizes that success demands “tenacity, determination, consistency and a high tolerance for pain,” noting that the discipline leaves visible marks on practitioners while transforming overall fitness levels.

Despite approaching her mid-80s, Abignente shows no intention of retiring from the sport. She stated she refuses to allow age alone to dictate her athletic pursuits, maintaining that while she acknowledges her years, the number should not determine her capabilities or choices.
