Comedian Whitney Cummings Says Trump Joke Was Removed From Netflix’s Mark Twain Prize Special

Comedian Whitney Cummings has alleged that Netflix and the Kennedy Center removed a joke targeting President Donald Trump from the Mark Twain Prize special honoring Bill Maher, which debuted on the streaming platform Tuesday. Cummings, who performed at the Kennedy Center ceremony last month as part of the tribute to the “Real Time” host, claimed her routine underwent editorial scrutiny after she delivered the contentious material to the audience.

During a recent episode of her “Good for You” podcast, Cummings detailed the contested joke: “Donald Trump couldn’t make it tonight, he got caught in sex traffic.” She explained that while the joke remained in the initial broadcast version, both the Kennedy Center and Netflix subsequently requested its removal, forcing a difficult decision about whether to comply with the demand.

Cummings acknowledged that Kennedy Center staff members faced potential professional consequences if the material aired, characterizing their position as untenable. She expressed frustration that the joke had already circulated among audience members present at the ceremony, questioning the logic of post-production censorship once information had entered public circulation.

Netflix attributed the edit to the Kennedy Center’s contractual authority over the broadcast. A Kennedy Center spokesperson told Fox News Digital that edits occur through collaborative discussion to optimize the final product, citing time constraints and standard industry practice similar to cuts made during last year’s Conan O’Brien tribute special.

A Kennedy Center source disputed Cummings’ characterization of events, stating her account “has no validity” and denying the institution would terminate employees over comedic content. The source maintained that removal of the joke followed normal editorial procedures unrelated to political pressure or retaliatory measures.

This controversy marks the second instance in which Cummings reportedly altered her set for the Mark Twain Prize special. In a prior podcast appearance, she revealed cutting another Trump-related joke concerning his addition of his name to the Kennedy Center building and an alleged animosity toward President John F. Kennedy.
