Michigan Democrat El-Sayed Criticizes CNN’s Interview Approach During Senate Campaign

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate seeking Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, leveled criticism at CNN during a Sunday rally in Grand Rapids, characterizing his network appearances as intrusive and misdirected. El-Sayed used sharp rhetoric to describe the tenor of his recent interviews, drawing laughter from supporters gathered at the event.

The candidate’s frustration centers on what he views as CNN’s fixation with international affairs at the expense of domestic priorities. El-Sayed emphasized that his positions on foreign spending stem from a belief in redirecting resources toward American communities, particularly Michigan residents who are his prospective constituents.

Earlier Sunday, El-Sayed appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where anchor Jake Tapper questioned him about previously disclosed audio recordings in which El-Sayed declined to comment on the February killing of Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The candidate attributed his reluctance to discuss the matter to what he termed a “ridiculous pretext,” instead pivoting to reference three U.S. servicemembers killed by Iranian military strikes in Jordan.

In a separate confrontation earlier this month with CNN anchor Kasie Hunt, El-Sayed disputed the network’s focus on his deleted social media posts supporting police defunding efforts. He accused CNN of prioritizing sensational coverage over substantive policy discussions that voters consider important.

El-Sayed, endorsed by progressive figures including Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, is locked in a competitive Democratic primary race against Michigan Representative Haley Stevens. Both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez attended El-Sayed’s Sunday campaign rally.
