A Memphis woman has been charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of a man authorities say was concealed under her child’s bed. The incident occurred Thursday when Kendra Scott discovered Rodderius Morton hidden beneath the mattress in her daughter’s room, according to police records and an affidavit filed in the case.
Officers responding to the scene found Morton in Scott’s front yard suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. In her statement to police, Scott explained that she “saw a dude under my kids’ bed, and I did what I had to do,” documents indicate.
Witnesses present at the home told investigators that Morton had entered through the back door after being invited inside. According to their accounts, a verbal altercation erupted between Scott and Morton as he attempted to leave the residence, with Scott yelling at him to exit the home. One witness reported hearing a single gunshot fired while the two were on the front porch.
Scott is being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder and unlawful employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. Her attorney has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations.
