Ferran Torres celebrated Spain’s World Cup triumph with a hat that echoed President Donald Trump’s political messaging. The Spanish forward, who netted the decisive goal in the 106th minute against Argentina at New York/New Jersey Stadium, donned a “Make Spain Great Again” cap during the nation’s victory parade as tens of thousands of fans lined the streets to honor their champions.
Torres posted images from the celebration showing him shirtless aboard a parade vehicle, sporting the hat that mimics Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. The timing proved notable given that Trump himself had attended the final match alongside First Lady Melania Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino, witnessing Spain dominate throughout the contest.
Spain’s World Cup final victory marked only the second time the nation had reached the championship game, with their previous triumph occurring in 2010. Torres credited the entire Spanish population for the victory, telling FIFA broadcasters after the match that “the goal came from 47 million people, not just those of us that are here,” while acknowledging that destiny had favored his team’s triumph.
The match remained scoreless until Torres capitalized on a rebound in the extra period, converting after Nico Williams Jr.’s header was deflected back into the penalty area. Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez had made several crucial saves to keep the match level before Torres broke through in the 106th minute.
Post-match altercations between Argentine and Spanish players drew FIFA’s attention for investigation following the final whistle. Spain’s victory ignited celebrations across the country, particularly in Madrid, with festivities continuing well after the team’s return home.
