Ukrainian forces unleashed a sustained drone assault on Moscow with more than 400 unmanned aircraft Monday morning, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. The attack marked another escalation in the relentless cycle of strikes between Russia and Ukraine that shows little sign of abating after more than four years of full-scale invasion.
Russian air defense systems intercepted 85 drones near Moscow, though the majority were reportedly destroyed farther from the capital, Sobyanin said. Regional officials reported that 10 people sustained injuries and multiple residential buildings and civilian infrastructure facilities sustained damage from the bombardment.
The strike ignited fires at industrial sites south of Moscow, including the Yuzhnye Vrata industrial park approximately 30 kilometers away and an oil depot in Podolsk about 20 kilometers south, according to local authorities. Ukraine has increasingly weaponized long-range drone technology during the conflict, targeting Russian energy infrastructure and creating fuel shortages.
The drone attack followed a Russian bombardment of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with ballistic missiles that killed at least six people and wounded dozens Sunday, according to Ukrainian officials. The Institute for the Study of War noted that Russia has launched more ballistic missiles in July than the country reportedly produces monthly, suggesting Moscow is depleting existing stockpiles.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans Monday to hold critical discussions aimed at resolving a deepening political crisis within Ukraine following last week’s government reshuffle. The changes, which replaced 35-year-old Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov with 60-year-old Soviet-trained General Oleksandr Syrskyi, sparked widespread street protests and exposed divisions between military traditionalists and younger reformers over war strategy.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed Monday that its forces struck fuel storage facilities in the southern port city of Odesa overnight. Russia fired two missiles and 94 long-range strike drones at Ukrainian territory, with Ukrainian air defenses jamming or intercepting 81 drones while nine drones and one missile caused damage at nine locations, the Ukrainian air force reported.
