A residential fire in Coconut Creek claimed the lives of at least seven cats and sent one resident to the hospital early Monday morning. Coconut Creek Fire Rescue responded to the blaze in the 900 block of Palmetto Drive just before 4:15 a.m., according to departmental officials.
Flames initially engulfed the home’s garage before spreading upward to the roof structure, causing substantial damage throughout the residence. The fire department successfully extinguished the blaze, and the resident was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment of smoke inhalation injuries.
A dog inhabiting the property managed to escape the fire safely, officials stated. The investigation into the fire’s cause remains ongoing, with no additional details released at the time of reporting.
One nearby resident expressed shock at the incident, noting the unusual nature of such an emergency in the typically quiet neighborhood where early morning walks are routine.
