Congo’s Ebola Death Toll Reaches 930 as Outbreak Accelerates Across Eastern Region

Congo’s Ministry of Health reported at least 930 deaths from the country’s Ebola outbreak as of Saturday, with confirmed cases now totaling 2,344. The alarming figures underscore the severity of an epidemic that continues to accelerate across the nation’s eastern regions, with health authorities documenting 37 fatalities in a single 24-hour period—among the highest daily tolls since the crisis began.

The outbreak, officially declared May 15 in eastern Congo, has grown faster than any previous Ebola epidemic in recorded history. The Bundibugyo virus strain driving the outbreak remains relatively uncommon and lacks approved vaccines or treatments, complicating containment efforts and raising concerns among medical professionals and international health organizations monitoring the situation.

Security threats and labor disputes have significantly hampered the response in the hardest-hit Ituri province. Authorities documented at least 12 attacks on health facilities and response teams since May, while numerous health workers have abandoned their posts in protest over unpaid wages, further straining already-stretched resources.

The human toll among medical personnel has been substantial, with at least 36 infected health workers succumbing to the virus. The health ministry said 724 patients are currently isolated in hospital settings and indicated it is escalating intervention activities across affected zones to stem further transmission.
