The U.S. Central Command reported Sunday that one American service member died Saturday in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation involving unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone. A second service member sustained injuries in the same incident and is receiving medical care, according to CENTCOM officials.
The fatality occurred on July 18 as U.S. forces worked to recover and safely neutralize explosive material from the Iranian unmanned attack aircraft. CENTCOM did not provide additional operational details but confirmed the detonation was conducted in a controlled manner with appropriate safeguards in place.
In a separate development, military personnel discovered unidentified remains Sunday in Jordan during an active search for a missing American service member. The remains were located following a separate Iranian assault on a U.S. installation in Jordan that occurred Friday, killing two service members and prompting the evacuation of four others to regional hospitals.
CENTCOM stated that the recovered remains will undergo examination to establish identity and that the agency is withholding names and additional details pending family notifications. Four injured personnel from the Jordan attack have since been discharged from medical facilities.
