Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office launched a sharp rebuke Sunday at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani after the Democratic leader suggested his administration might enforce an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against the Israeli leader during a planned visit to the city. Netanyahu’s team characterized Mamdani’s position as a distraction from his record governing New York and dismissed the ICC proceedings as lacking legitimate authority.
Netanyahu’s office posted on X that the ICC represents a “kangaroo court” without jurisdiction over Americans or Israelis, specifically targeting the warrant issued by former ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan. The statement alleged Khan released the arrest order days before facing public allegations of sexual misconduct, suggesting he sought to divert attention from his own legal troubles.
The prime minister’s office drew parallels between Mamdani and Khan, suggesting both were engaging in misdirection from their respective failings. Netanyahu’s team argued the mayor should address New York’s problems rather than attacking Israel, which they described as “the only democracy in the Middle East.”
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed Mamdani’s threat as empty political posturing, telling Fox News the mayor would never actually attempt to arrest Netanyahu when he visits for the United Nations General Assembly in September. Pompeo characterized Mamdani as a communist and antisemitic politician seeking attention for his base.
Even Democratic Party figures have distanced themselves from Mamdani’s stance. Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams warned that threatening to arrest a democratically elected ally leader constitutes reckless behavior that could endanger American personnel stationed globally. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania similarly condemned Mamdani as a “clown,” noting America is not party to the ICC and urging the mayor to focus on local governance.
