The timing of the warning comes after Iranian missiles and drone strikes on Jordan claimed the lives of two U.S. service members while another remains unaccounted for, according to military officials. U.S. Embassy officials in Amman subsequently released their own security alert following Jordanian authorities’ closure of Aqaba’s airport and seaport due to what officials characterized as a “specific and credible threat.” Since March, the State Department has mandated the departure of non-essential U.S. government staff and their dependents from Jordan in response to persistent security hazards.

State Department officials characterize the current security landscape as “complex” and caution that hostilities could intensify rapidly with minimal warning. The advisory specifically notes that U.S. diplomatic installations outside the Middle East have previously been targets and warns that Iran-aligned organizations could attack American facilities or Americans worldwide.

Americans traveling internationally, particularly those in the Middle East region, should exercise heightened caution and maintain a low public profile, according to the guidance. The State Department recommends avoiding visibly American locations when feasible, staying informed through local media, registering with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and monitoring alerts from the nearest embassy or consulate.

Ongoing military operations may disrupt commercial aviation, with potential flight cancellations and temporary airspace restrictions likely across the Middle East. Travelers are urged to verify flight status with airlines before departure and prepare for possible schedule changes, route modifications and sudden itinerary revisions as conditions develop.
