Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor announced Sunday that he sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage during his UFC 329 bout against Max Holloway on July 11 in Las Vegas. The injury mirrored damage he suffered to the opposite knee during a 2013 fight against the same opponent, though this time affected his right leg instead of his left.

McGregor’s comeback appearance marked his first octagon competition in five years but ended abruptly after just 1 minute and 9 seconds. The 38-year-old fighter awkwardly planted his leg while attempting a kick in the opening moments of the contest, and despite initial efforts to continue, the referee halted the match after he fell to the canvas on two subsequent occasions.

Following surgery performed the preceding week, McGregor reported he has already progressed to walking without crutches. He expressed optimism about competing again by summer 2027, citing advancements in regenerative medicine and training protocols as factors supporting a faster recovery than his previous ACL injury, which he rehabilitated from in nine months before fighting Diego Brandao.
