Pat Narduzzi, the head coach at Pitt, made aggressive statements Friday at ACC Media Days in Charlotte asserting the conference’s competitive strength relative to other Power Four leagues. The comments contributed to an already contentious gathering that featured critical remarks from Florida State’s Mike Norvell and SMU’s Rhett Lashlee.
The Pitt coach pointed to his team’s 6-2 conference record during the 2025 season as evidence supporting his position on the ACC’s quality. He also referenced regular-season and bowl-game victories against both SEC and Big Ten opponents, though he did not provide specific details about those matchups.
Available evidence presents a more complicated picture of ACC strength relative to the Big Ten. The 2026 NFL Draft produced 68 selections from Big Ten programs, including 10 first-round picks, while the ACC sent 38 players to the draft with just six selected in the opening round.
Recruiting data reinforces the disparity between the conferences. The Big Ten placed six teams within the 247Sports top-25 rankings compared to four for the ACC, and holds three of the top four spots nationally while Miami stands as the only ACC program in the top ten at number nine.
Recent championship success has also favored the Big Ten and SEC. The Big Ten has won three consecutive national titles, while the SEC captured four straight before that. Clemson’s 2018 championship, when quarterback Trevor Lawrence led the Tigers to victory over Alabama, remains the ACC’s most recent national title.
