Arizona Man Arrested After Riding Naked Atop Moving Union Pacific Locomotive in Colorado

A Quartzsite, Arizona resident was taken into custody Thursday following an extraordinary incident in which authorities say he boarded a Union Pacific locomotive and rode atop the vehicle while unclothed as it traversed northeastern Colorado. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Daniel Ray Ballance and said he allegedly shattered a window to gain access to the locomotive before climbing onto its roof while the train remained in motion. Multiple witnesses observed the unusual spectacle before law enforcement deputies apprehended him.

Ballance now faces both felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from the incident, according to the sheriff’s office. The agency declined to immediately release court documents specifying the charges, and investigators have not publicly revealed what circumstances led to the stunt or whether anyone aboard the locomotive sustained injuries during the ordeal.

Following his arrest, Ballance was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. In a lighthearted social media post, the sheriff’s office disclosed that Ballance told deputies about his affinity for vodka, beer, and banjo music, jokingly stating the agency had “separated him from those loves and the train ride.” The office added that Ballance remains presumed innocent pending trial.
