A progressive Democrat seeking to challenge a long-serving Washington state congressman is experiencing significant blowback from within party ranks following revelations about her campaign strategy regarding LGBTQ+ rights. Melissa Chaudhry, who is running against Rep. Adam Smith in Washington’s 9th Congressional District, made comments during an endorsement interview that have ignited controversy among Democratic organizations.
During discussions with The Stranger, Chaudhry explained that LGBTQ+ issues were absent from her campaign website due to concerns about alienating Muslim voters in her district. The remark prompted swift condemnation from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and Democratic leaders who view the omission as fundamentally incompatible with party values.
The Washington State Stonewall Democrats moved quickly to address what they characterized as a serious breach of trust. Andrew Ashiofu, the organization’s chair, told Fox News Digital that the candidate’s approach to concealing her positions represents a disqualifying factor for Democratic endorsement.
“Her comments reveal a deliberate strategy to obscure LGBTQ+ advocacy while simultaneously seeking party support,” Ashiofu stated. He emphasized that Democratic candidates should champion civil rights protections openly rather than tailoring messages based on demographic calculations.
The state Stonewall Democrats organization has urged multiple local Democratic groups—including those in the 11th, 33rd, 37th, and 43rd districts—to reconsider endorsements they previously awarded to Chaudhry. Ashiofu noted that neither the candidate nor her campaign has reached out to address the mounting pressure.
Additional complications emerged when The Stranger reported that Chaudhry indicated plans to switch to the Green Party after winning office as a Democrat. She reportedly requested that this information remain confidential throughout the endorsement process, raising further concerns among party officials.
Members of the 33rd District Democrats have begun exploring changes to their bylaws to enable rescission of endorsements, a procedural shift directly prompted by the current situation. This institutional response underscores the severity of the dispute within Democratic leadership.
Chaudhry has pushed back forcefully against the characterization of her positions. In a social media post, she asserted her long-standing commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and cited personal relationships as evidence of her authentic support.
“I’ve supported full equality for LGBTQ+ people my entire life,” Chaudhry wrote, noting that her sibling is LGBTQIA+ and that she co-founded her high school’s Gay Straight Alliance. She described the organization as so sensitive at the time that meeting locations had to be kept hidden.
Chaudhry also attributed her remarks to the atmosphere during the endorsement interview itself, characterizing the meeting as adversarial. She accused media outlets of misrepresenting her comments and claimed that journalists had previously ignored threats she received as a candidate.
Smith, a Democrat representing the district since 1997, faces multiple challengers in the primary election, including Chaudhry and other candidates competing for the nomination.
