Jordan’s military successfully intercepted five missiles fired from Iran on Thursday morning, according to the nation’s state-run Petra news agency. The interception occurred without casualties, a spokesman for Jordan’s armed forces confirmed, marking a significant air defense operation amid escalating regional tensions.
The missile defense action followed a major U.S. military campaign announced hours earlier. American forces conducted strikes lasting more than two hours against targets operated by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, hitting dozens of locations including military command centers, missile and drone production facilities, and coastal defense infrastructure, the U.S. Central Command stated on social media.
U.S. President Donald Trump had promised to strike Iran forcefully after the nation targeted a Jordanian military base housing American troops. The American response represented a significant escalation in tit-for-tat military exchanges between the two adversaries across the region.
Iranian state media reported injuries on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and explosions in Khuzestan province following the U.S. strikes. Additional attacks in Iraq, conducted jointly with Saudi Arabia against Iranian-backed militias, killed at least 20 fighters and six Iranian military advisers on Wednesday.
Drone strikes also struck natural gas vessels at Egypt’s Damietta port, igniting fires on a U.S.-owned floating storage facility and a Greek-owned tanker, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey. The responsible party remained unclear, with no injuries reported from the incident.
The rapid succession of military operations across multiple fronts signaled an intensification of the five-month conflict that has disrupted global economic markets and faced domestic American opposition. Military analysts warned the continued fighting risks depleting already-strained U.S. munitions reserves needed to maintain regional security commitments.
