A parasitic illness has infected more than 18,000 people across 45 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced following a Wednesday data update. The outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal disease transmitted through contaminated food or water, continues to expand geographically across the nation.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite and typically produces symptoms including diarrhea, loss of appetite, and abdominal cramps. The disease can be treated with antibiotics, though infections may persist for weeks without medical intervention.
