A perplexing discovery made by two Utah sisters during an Airbnb stay in San Diego has captured widespread social media attention, and the explanation behind the coincidence has now emerged. Libby Birrell, 19, and her older sister Aubrey Birrell, 26, encountered a framed beach photograph on the wall of their rental home in Oceanside that featured members of their own family.
The siblings were visiting the property in early July alongside approximately 30 relatives gathered to mark their grandfather’s 80th birthday celebration. Upon spotting the image, both sisters were struck by the uncanny nature of the discovery, prompting them to alert the entire group to examine the photo closely.
“The moment we saw it, we made everyone come up and look, and they were all in awe,” Aubrey Birrell explained during an interview with Fox News Digital. She described how she immediately reached out to friends to share the shocking find, with her contacts equally astonished by the situation.
The initial reaction from the family members oscillated between fascination and unease. “The first time we were sleeping, I will say we were creeped out,” Aubrey said. “It felt really strange. Did they know we were coming? We were just feeling a little confused, a little eerie, but also it was just shocking.”
After questioning the rental’s host, the mystery quickly unraveled. The home’s interior decorator sourced the artwork from a local San Diego photographer who specializes in aerial beach photography. These enlarged images serve as decorative elements throughout various vacation rental properties in the area.
The sisters pinpointed the photograph’s origin to approximately one decade prior, when their family visited either Mission Beach or Imperial Beach during a soccer tournament for their brother. “We remember the swimsuits. We remember the time. We’re pretty confident,” Aubrey confirmed. “She must have captured us when we were there.”
The viral video sparked considerable conversation online, with numerous commenters sharing their own experiences of appearing in photographs at unexpected locations. Some viewers recounted spotting themselves in pictures displayed at retail establishments or featured in promotional materials across different states, including Florida.
The post also generated reactions ranging from humorous to genuinely unsettling, with certain online users drawing comparisons to the opening scenes of horror films. “A lot of people were telling us we should leave, that it was like the start of a horror movie,” Aubrey recalled. “But a lot of people also shared similar experiences, and it was kind of cool to hear those stories.”
The rental host subsequently offered the family a complimentary print of the beach photograph as a keepsake from their stay. Aubrey expressed enthusiasm about the gesture, noting that obtaining a copy would serve as a lasting reminder of their unusual encounter. “I think it’s fun,” she said, encouraging future guests to seek out the photograph during their visits to the property.
