Seattle Storm center Stefanie Dolson arrived at Tuesday night’s matchup against the Indiana Fever wearing a shirt that read “Trans Rights are Human Rights,” an appearance that gained additional weight given recent comments from Fever guard Sophie Cunningham defending women’s sports protections. The Storm’s official social media account amplified the message by sharing images of Dolson in the shirt across its platforms.
Cunningham had faced scrutiny following an ESPN profile in which she addressed accusations of anti-transgender bias while defending female athletes’ protections. “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” Cunningham said in the article. She emphasized her commitment to truth and protecting young girls in locker rooms and athletic competition, noting concerns about biological differences in sports.
When asked by reporters whether she maintained that position, Cunningham doubled down on her remarks. She cited Title IX as a mechanism for protecting female athletes and reframed her stance as rooted in fairness rather than animus. “I extend love, and I don’t dislike anyone… but I’m also there to love biological women. And I think that there are rights that need to be protected,” she said.
Within professional women’s basketball, Cunningham has become an outlier. The WNBA Players Association has publicly endorsed transgender inclusion, and former Fever teammate Brianna Turner has argued that restrictions on transgender athletes distract from systemic inequities. The league has positioned itself as a progressive force on social activism, leaving limited space for dissenting viewpoints on the issue.
The Indiana Fever organization issued a statement noting that its players represent “thoughtful adults with their own perspectives and voices.” The Seattle Storm’s embrace of Dolson’s message stood in sharp contrast to the backlash Cunningham has endured for her public advocacy on behalf of female athletes.
The Fever defeated the Storm 105-95 in Tuesday’s contest, though the athletic outcome was overshadowed by the broader cultural clash playing out within the league.
