An electrical transformer detonated in Hackensack early Wednesday, triggering fires that consumed several parked vehicles and severing power connections to more than 1,000 residents in the surrounding area. The pre-dawn incident disrupted utility service across multiple blocks as emergency crews responded to control the blazes.
The explosion’s force ignited fuel tanks in nearby cars, creating a chain reaction of vehicle fires that spread across the incident scene. Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames while utility personnel assessed damage to the electrical infrastructure and worked to restore service to affected customers.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the transformer failure. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about aging utility infrastructure in densely populated areas vulnerable to equipment malfunctions.
