A well-known Indian activist and engineer advocating for education reform has been hospitalized in New Delhi following a significant decline in his physical condition during an extended hunger strike that began 20 days ago. Sonam Wangchuk, 59, was transferred to a medical facility on Saturday as his health deteriorated while participating in the ongoing demonstration.
Wangchuk had been staging his protest at Jantar Mantar, a public demonstration area in the capital, alongside student supporters and members of the Cockroach Janta Party. The movement has been calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following revelations that examination papers were distributed to certain candidates before the official test date.
Delhi Police acknowledged that medical professionals and a judicial order prompted the decision to move Wangchuk to the hospital. The department noted that some demonstrators attempted to interfere with the transfer, though authorities ultimately completed the transport without incident.
The Cockroach Janta Party, which originated in May following a controversial remark by Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant comparing some unemployed citizens to pests, has grown into a significant grassroots movement. The party’s messaging strategy transformed the derogatory comparison into a symbol of social resilience, attracting over 21 million followers on Instagram within weeks of its launch.
Beyond demanding the minister’s ouster, the movement is pushing for comprehensive changes to how examinations are administered and organized across India. Demonstrators are also seeking monetary assistance for families who have lost children to suicide connected to the exam paper leaks or academic pressure.
Government security personnel have substantially increased their presence surrounding the protest zone, with police establishing additional barricades and deploying paramilitary units. Authorities characterized the heightened security as a standard precautionary measure and requested that protesters maintain order and work cooperatively with law enforcement.
The Cockroach Party released a statement on social media alleging that the government had “forcefully abducted” Wangchuk “without his or his family’s consent,” characterizing the hospitalization as an involuntary action rather than a medical necessity.
