Draymond Green will remain with the Golden State Warriors on a one-year deal worth $27.7 million, according to Klutch Sports. The agreement marks a return to the franchise after the veteran forward declined his original player option in June to provide the team salary cap flexibility for a pursuit of free agent LeBron James.
The Warriors had attempted to recruit James as a potential partner for Stephen Curry, but the three-time NBA champion instead elected to sign a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. The failed recruitment effort left Golden State in the position of re-signing Green to the exact figure he had foregone months earlier.
The new contract does not include a no-trade clause and will push the Warriors above the first apron, restricting the franchise to veteran minimum signings while maintaining some future cap flexibility. General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. negotiated the deal as a single-year arrangement, avoiding a longer commitment to the aging defensive stalwart.
Green’s return provides Golden State with its emotional leader and primary defensive anchor, though the franchise faces the reality of paying premium compensation for a roster that appears diminished from its championship years. The Warriors’ offseason gambit ultimately produced no gains, leaving them to compensate Green at the same rate he would have earned had the LeBron James recruitment never materialized.
