Miami Beach authorities took a 40-year-old suspect into custody Monday after he allegedly drew a knife on another passenger aboard a Miami-Dade Transit bus. The confrontation occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the North Beach area near Abbott Avenue and Indian Creek Drive, according to police records.
The incident began when the suspect, identified as Demetrius Jerrell Byrd, disrupted other riders by “screaming and yelling” on the bus. A fellow passenger attempted to de-escalate the situation through conversation, but the exchange escalated when the passenger instructed Byrd to be quiet.
In response, Byrd retrieved a silver multi-tool from his pocket and opened a blade attachment, then approached the passenger while asking, “Who wants to die today?” Police officers recovered the blade during a search and charged Byrd with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Byrd was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained held on a $5,000 bond as of Tuesday morning. The booking also noted an outstanding domestic violence warrant against him.
