California Family Claims Racial Motivation Behind Violent Poolside Attack at Maui Resort

A California family is claiming they were deliberately singled out in what they characterize as a racially motivated assault at an upscale Maui resort, during which attackers allegedly wielded chairs as weapons and assaulted family members ranging from teenagers to elderly relatives. The incident unfolded on July 17 around 10 p.m. at the Kaanapali Alii resort in Lahaina, according to law enforcement officials who confirmed the volatile poolside confrontation.

Maui police responded to reports of a disorderly gathering that involved roughly 30 individuals. Upon arrival, officers found between 10 and 15 people still assembled near the pool area, with multiple individuals displaying visible injuries sustained during the altercation. Investigators identified seven victims from California, ranging in age from 17 to 62 years old.

According to police accounts, the melee began when an unknown male approached the family seeking assistance before juvenile males allegedly pursued him into the vicinity where other family members were located. Those assailants then directed their violence broadly at the surrounding group, hurling chairs and striking multiple people indiscriminately, including senior citizens present at the pool area.

The family reported that attackers made repeated verbal threats using a Hawaiian term for foreign nationals before the violence began, leading them to request that authorities classify the incident as a hate crime. Maui police have not designated the case as a hate crime investigation at this stage.

One family member sustained particularly serious injuries when struck in the head with a chair while attempting to shield other relatives, requiring 13 staples to close the resulting wound. A 20-year-old Makawao resident was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault but was subsequently released pending the continuing investigation.

The Kaanapali Alii resort stated that its security personnel responded immediately upon learning of the violence, contacting police and emergency medical services while remaining on scene to assist. The resort has supplied surveillance footage to investigators and pledged complete cooperation with law enforcement throughout the process.

Resort officials acknowledged receiving prior reports of threats and disruptive conduct linked to individuals involved in the incident but declined to elaborate due to the ongoing criminal investigation. The property emphasized that drawing conclusions about motive before the investigation concludes would be premature, while affirming its commitment to guest safety and supporting law enforcement efforts.
