A southbound Brightline train struck a red sedan positioned on the tracks near the 900 block of Northeast Flagler Drive in Fort Lauderdale just before midnight Sunday, according to first responders. The impact dragged the vehicle approximately five blocks south to the 400 block of Northeast Flagler Drive before the train came to a stop.
The female driver managed to exit the vehicle independently and was discovered by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews lying on the ground next to the car. According to her husband, the sedan became wedged underneath the train following the collision, though the driver’s seating area escaped the worst of the impact.
Emergency personnel transported the woman to Broward Health Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including a fractured hand and split lip. Crews at the scene noted her condition was expected to improve despite the severity of the accident.
Authorities have not yet determined the circumstances that caused the vehicle to end up on the railroad tracks. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
