Oakland Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers sustained a torn meniscus while running the bases and faces the possibility of undergoing surgery that would end his 2026 season, according to ESPN. The 28-year-old All-Star and his team are currently evaluating whether to proceed with the procedure to repair the injury to his knee.
The injury complications eliminate Langeliers from the trade market ahead of the August 3 deadline, effectively removing him from consideration by potential suitors despite his exceptional performance this season. The A’s had shown no interest in trading their star catcher even amid the club’s 44-60 record, as Langeliers remains among baseball’s premier defensive and offensive players at his position.
Langeliers was selected to his first All-Star Game this month while maintaining a .263 batting average with a .829 on-base plus slugging percentage, 23 home runs and 51 runs batted in. The strong numbers follow his 2025 campaign, which featured 31 home runs and a career-high .861 OPS, positioning him on pace to establish new personal records before the injury occurred.
The development shifts attention to other available catchers, including Colorado’s Hunter Goodman and Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman, who may attract increased interest from contending teams. Oakland will deploy Jonah Heim at the position going forward, though his veteran status and previous involvement in trade discussions complicate his availability moving ahead of the deadline.
