Koivun Captures 3M Open in Third Professional Tournament, Outlasts Scheffler

Jackson Koivun captured the 3M Open on Sunday at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, finishing at a tournament-record 25-under 259 to claim victory by three strokes over Scottie Scheffler. The 21-year-old carded a final-round 5-under 66 in sweltering 97-degree heat, maintaining steady play throughout the afternoon without recording a single bogey for the second consecutive day.

Koivun’s stellar performance came remarkably early in his professional career, marking only his third start on tour. The recent Auburn NCAA championship leader confidently fended off the world’s top-ranked player, who produced a spectacular closing 63 from five groups ahead. Scheffler’s aggressive charge proved insufficient, extending his season to four runner-up finishes with just one victory to date at The American Express in California.

Saturday’s brilliant 61 had positioned Koivun with a three-shot lead entering the final round, which he managed expertly under pressure. Four additional players finished tied for third place at 20-under: Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Chandler Phillips, and Denny McCarthy. Koivun becomes the fourth rookie winner this season on the PGA Tour.

Prior to his breakthrough victory, Koivun had missed the cut at the John Deere Classic in Illinois and tied for 10th at the ISCO Championship in Kentucky earlier in July. The victory awards him $1,584,000 and vaults him 124 spots in the FedEx Cup standings into 70th place, positioning him just inside the playoff cutline with two regular season events remaining.

Lee Hodges previously held the 3M Open scoring record, finishing at 24-under 260 during the 2023 edition of the tournament.
