New York’s All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, marking another significant blow to the Yankees’ lineup. The team recalled outfielder Spencer Jones from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre to fill the roster spot before Sunday night’s matchup in Philadelphia.
The injury compounds mounting roster challenges for the Yankees, who are already without Aaron Judge since May 31 with a fractured rib and remain without designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, sidelined since April 24 with a strained right calf. Entering Sunday’s contest, New York trailed Tampa Bay by 2½ games in the AL East.
Bellinger sustained the injury while rounding first base on a double during the eighth inning of Saturday night’s 3-1 victory over the Phillies. Though he remained in the game momentarily, the outfielder departed slowly to the clubhouse afterward, and Max Schuemann replaced him in the field.
The 27-year-old has compiled a .259 average with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs across 102 games this season. Bellinger arrived in Philadelphia as the All-Star Game’s MVP and leads Major League Baseball with 19 defensive runs saved, though he has gone a month without a home run.
Bellinger signed a five-year, $162.5 million contract with the Yankees last winter and has been instrumental to the offense despite recent struggles. His average dipped to .254 heading into the All-Star break after hitting .280 through mid-June.
