Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul released personal diary entries from Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday, offering an intimate look at the former White House COVID advisor’s concerns about his escalating public prominence during the crisis. The Kentucky Republican, who has long criticized Fauci’s handling of the pandemic response, disclosed the journals as part of the committee’s ongoing oversight investigation into the government’s coronavirus actions.

The diary entries chronicle Fauci’s interactions with President Donald Trump, governors, international leaders, and media outlets as the pandemic unfolded. A striking pattern emerges across multiple entries: Fauci’s documented fixation on his own celebrity status even as the virus claimed more than 7 million lives globally, including approximately 1.2 million Americans.

In an April 7, 2020 entry, Fauci noted that press attention surrounding him had become relentless. “Press still hot and heavy about me. Multiple stories per day directly or indirectly involving me,” he wrote as deaths mounted across the country.

By May 21, 2020, with nearly 98,000 deaths reported globally and more than 27,000 in the United States, Fauci’s diary reflected his astonishment at his own visibility. He described his “national and international fame” as “explosive and really unimaginable,” asserting without exaggeration that he had become “the most famous and talked about person in the country.”

Fauci recorded positive observations about his relationship with Trump, noting the president seemed pleased with him despite the media focus. He observed that Secret Service agents had become so accustomed to his presence that they routinely waived him through White House security checkpoints without verifying his identification.

As summer arrived and case numbers soared, Fauci documented unexpected professional opportunities. He noted receiving an invitation to appear on “Dancing with the Stars” during a period when the United States recorded what he described as a record 40,000 new cases in a single day.

Frustration with the Trump administration also permeates the entries. On July 2, 2020, after warning of a potential exponential surge heading into the Fourth of July weekend, Fauci criticized the White House for essentially abandoning pandemic response efforts and failing to acknowledge the ongoing outbreak.

Fauci further complained that White House communications staff had begun restricting his television appearances and media access. He expressed concern that news coverage increasingly portrayed conflict between himself and the president, undermining the administration’s public messaging.
