Matt Damon has disclosed the demanding physical preparation that went into his portrayal of the legendary Greek warrior Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s latest film. The 55-year-old actor explained that the rigorous transformation process consumed much of his daily life as he worked to achieve the specific physique Nolan envisioned for the mythological role.

During an appearance on “Live with Kelly and Mark,” Damon revealed Nolan’s direction for the character: a lean, muscular appearance befitting a battle-hardened veteran of the Trojan War who would nonetheless accept sustenance if offered. Damon acknowledged this particular body composition proved exceptionally challenging to achieve compared to other physical transformations he has undertaken throughout his career.

The film, an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, opened July 17 to approximately $264 million globally—the largest opening weekend of Nolan’s directorial career. Damon underwent the intensive six-month regimen to authentically portray the weathered warrior enduring his decade-long journey home after the 10-year Trojan War.

Damon disclosed to the hosts that he slimmed down to his high school weight of 167 pounds, compared to his typical range of 185 to 200 pounds. In a January appearance on the Kelce brothers’ podcast “New Heights,” he noted the regimented approach mirrored an athlete’s commitment to daily discipline.

The actor maintained meticulous control over his nutritional intake throughout production. Every food portion was measured and weighed, requiring what he described as intentional decision-making at each meal, fundamentally reshaping his relationship with eating.

Damon adopted a gluten-free diet to achieve his target weight, discovering gluten’s presence in numerous foods and beverages he had previously consumed without consideration. He acknowledged sacrificing beer and other beloved staples, though he noted the availability of gluten-free alternatives in some categories.

The commitment was tested during filming in Italy when his wife Luciana and four daughters visited. After initially promising to share pasta with them, Damon reversed course and ordered steak instead, later sampling single bites of their dishes to honor his commitment without derailing his dietary goals.

Following production completion, Damon has maintained the gluten-free approach, reporting significant health improvements since eliminating gluten from his diet. He emphasized that continuing the practice reflects genuine physical benefits rather than lingering professional obligation.

This transformation marks a more measured approach compared to previous roles. For 1996’s “Courage Under Fire,” Damon lost 40 to 50 pounds in approximately 100 days, an extreme reduction a physician cautioned could have permanently damaged his heart.

Damon later reflected critically on that earlier experience, stating he had exceeded healthy boundaries and caused himself genuine illness including dizziness and hot flashes. While the physical deterioration enhanced his performance authenticity, he declared such dangerous methods unacceptable by current standards.

In contrast, his 2009 weight gain of approximately 30 pounds to portray whistleblower Mark Whitacre in “The Informant!” proved considerably more enjoyable. Damon recalled the process as straightforward and pleasurable, simply consuming available food without restriction.

The actor now firmly rejects subjecting himself to dangerous physical extremes regardless of artistic merit. He noted that while willing to pursue ambitious transformations earlier in his career, he will not risk his long-term health through severe weight fluctuations moving forward.

Beyond dietary changes, Damon grew a natural beard for approximately one year to embody Odysseus authentically. He and Nolan dismissed prosthetic beard options given the extensive water-based stunts requiring practical solutions rather than artificial enhancements.

Damon explained that Nolan’s commitment to practical filmmaking dictated the decision. The director insisted on shooting scenes in camera without CGI, meaning that visible crowds, ships, and landscapes were physically present rather than digitally created.

The collaboration reunited Damon with Nolan following their previous work together on “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer.” Damon praised the director’s approach to actor direction and his insistence on maintaining production authenticity through practical effects and meticulous coordination across departments.

Damon recalled that when Nolan initially offered him the lead role, minimal deliberation proved necessary. After a brief conversation, Nolan presented a two-word pitch—”The Odyssey”—which Damon immediately accepted without requiring further details about the character or production.
